Eating for Heart Health

The food that you eat can have a big effect on the health of your heart. To promote health, the Heart Foundation recommends consuming a healthy diet containing a variety of foods from all food groups.

Heart Healthy Nutrition Tips
  • Eat 2 serves of fruit each day
  • Eat a variety of different coloured vegetables each day
  • Eat the skin of fruits and vegetables where possible
  • Select wholegrain breads & cereals
  • Choose reduced fat varieties of milk, cheese and yoghurt
  • Choose products  labelled “no added salt”, “low salt” or “reduced salt”
  • Trim fat from meat and remove the skin from chicken prior to cooking
  • Choose healthier cooking methods such as grilling and stir-frying
  • Limit take-aways and eating out
  • Snack on unsalted nuts
  • Avoid or minimise alcohol intake
  • Drink water
  • Exercise regularly: Being physically active helps the heart to become stronger
  • Quit smoking: Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood, and damages the walls of your blood vessels
